Changelog

What has changed on HerePDF, newest first. Every tool runs in your browser and your files never leave your device; this list only says what is new. For the tools themselves, see the home page, and for how we check our claims, how we test.

OCR PDF and Check Signatures

  • New tool: OCR PDF. Make a scanned PDF searchable and copyable in your browser, in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese or Dutch. It adds an invisible text layer and leaves the pages as they are. The first use downloads about 2 to 5 MB of OCR files; your PDF is never uploaded.
  • New tool: Check Signatures. See whether a PDF carries digital signatures, the name, reason, place and time written in each one, and whether anything was saved after it was signed. It reads the file only - it does not check that a signature is valid.

Bug fixes and small improvements

  • We've fixed some bugs and made small improvements.

Create Form, and the whole site now works offline

  • New tool: Create Form. Draw text boxes, check boxes and radio buttons on a flat PDF or a scan to make it fillable, with names, hint text for screen readers, and required or read-only options.
  • After one visit the whole site works with the network off. A line in the footer says "Works offline: ready" once the pages and tools are stored in your browser. Your PDFs are never stored.
  • HerePDF can be installed from your browser to your home screen or desktop, where the browser offers it.

Bookmarks follow their pages in Organize and Split

  • Organize keeps a PDF's bookmarks pointed at the right pages after you reorder, delete or duplicate pages, and nests the bookmarks of any PDF you add under that file's name.
  • Split gives every part only the bookmarks for its own pages, in every mode, including Split by size and Cut in half.

A Bookmarks tool, and Compare shows picture differences

  • New tool: Bookmarks. Read, add, rename, nest, reorder and delete a PDF's bookmarks, or paste in a table of contents. Merge now keeps each file's bookmarks too.
  • Compare PDFs has a Pictures mode that shows what changed visually between two versions, which catches changes on scanned pages that a text comparison cannot see.

Extract Images handles scanner formats

  • Extract Images now saves JBIG2, CCITT fax and JPEG 2000 pictures, formats many scanners produce, as PNG files.

Bug fixes and small improvements

  • We've fixed some bugs and made small improvements.

Five new tools and a bigger Organize

  • New tools: Remove Hidden Data (comments, attachments, scripts and thumbnails), Header, Footer & Bates numbering, Extract Images, Page Layout (N-up, booklet and poster) and Compare PDFs.
  • A password-protected PDF now asks for its password when you add it to any tool, instead of failing.
  • Organize can reverse the page order, interleave the two halves of a stack (for double-sided scans) and suggest blank pages to remove. Split can cut every page in half, and Image to PDF can take a photo with your camera.

Password Protect, Flatten and more ways to split

  • New tools: Password Protect, which adds an AES-256 open password, and Flatten, which locks form answers and comments into the page.
  • Split by every N pages, by bookmarks, or by a maximum file size.

Annotate

  • New tool: Annotate. Highlight text, add notes, draw, add shapes, arrows and text boxes, then keep the markup editable or flatten it.

Fill PDF Form

  • New tool: Fill Form. Type into a PDF form's own fields, tick its boxes and choose from its lists, then keep it fillable or flatten it.

Sign PDF

  • New tool: Sign. Draw, type or upload a signature, and add dates, short text and initials on every page. It is a visual signature, not a certified digital one.

Smaller files from Compress

  • Compress's Balanced and Smallest presets now recompress JPEG images in your browser, which shrinks most scans and photo PDFs. Lossless, JBIG2, fax and JPEG 2000 images are left alone, and the result says what was done.
