  3. 3.Click "Save bookmarks" and download the PDF. Only the bookmarks change.

Frequently asked questions

What are bookmarks in a PDF?

The outline a reader shows in its side panel: a clickable table of contents that jumps to a page. Long reports, contracts and manuals are much easier to move around in with one. Word and most layout programs can make them; scans and printed-to-PDF files usually have none.

What does this tool change?

Only the bookmarks. The pages, their content, the document properties and everything else in the file are left as they are. You can rename, add, delete, move and nest bookmarks, set the page each one jumps to, and paste a whole table of contents in as text.

What is not kept?

A bookmark's text colour and bold or italic style are not kept, and neither is a bookmark that opens another file, runs a script or opens an address other than a web, email, ftp or phone link, or one that points at a page that does not exist. Before you save, the tool says how many of each your file has. Bookmarks that open a web address are kept; you can move or delete them but not edit the address.

Where does a bookmark open on the page?

A bookmark you do not change opens exactly where it did before, at the same zoom and position. A bookmark you point at a different page opens showing the whole page. Bookmarks you bring in with "Import or copy as text" are new, so they open showing the whole page.

Does it work on a signed PDF?

It saves, but saving rewrites the file, which breaks a digital signature. If the signature matters, keep the signed original and add bookmarks to a copy.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The PDF is read and rewritten inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and bookmark titles, which can quote your document, are never stored or logged.
