Does a watermark actually protect my document?

No, and it's important to be clear about that. A watermark added this way is drawn on top of the page — anyone with basic PDF editing tools can crop it out, draw over it, or otherwise remove it. It's a visible marker (a draft label, a logo, an attribution), not a security or access-control measure. If you need real protection, that means encryption or access control, which is a different problem this tool doesn't solve.

Can I watermark only some pages?

Yes. Define one or more page ranges — anything outside those ranges is left untouched. Unlike the page-numbers tool, ranges here can overlap without causing an error; an overlapping page is simply watermarked once, the same as if you had defined non-overlapping ranges covering it — there is no double-stamping to worry about.

What is the difference between single and tiled layout?

Single draws one centered, rotated stamp on the page — the classic diagonal watermark look. Tiled repeats the stamp across the whole page at a spacing you choose, which is more resistant to someone simply cropping the watermark out of a small area.

Does the watermark image keep its original photo metadata?

No. If you upload a JPEG, camera and GPS metadata (EXIF) is stripped before it's embedded, the same way the Image to PDF tool already handles photos — the image itself is unchanged, only that metadata is removed.
